Orchard CMS – first look

Orchard CMS was recommended to me as a fast-improving alternative to WordPress. I approached it with trepidation. I have some knowledge of PHP, which is important to understanding WordPress whenever you need to look under the hood, but none whatsoever of .NET. Also, it has a reputation for being less user-friendly than rival CMS systems.

Orchard is open-source software but was initiated primarily by a group of Microsoft employees, and is believed to be well-regarded by the company.  That suggests that there could be significant support if the project continues to grow.

Lynda.com Online Training Library

When looking to improve your skills in an area, it is often difficult to know where to start. Lynda.com has thousands of video tutorials on subjects ranging from game design to typography to Photoshop to HTML 5. The standard is generally superb. There are of course, a wide range of presenters and you will like some more than others, but the standard never varies greatly.

Most of the tutorials focus on software products, and are clearly labelled for beginners, intermediate and advanced users. Photoshop CS6 alone has 21 tutorials, ranging from 43 minutes to more than 22 hours in length, with the average tutorial being around 3 hours in length. Titles include “Photoshop for Photographers, Photoshop for Designers: Type Effects, Photoshop CS6 Essential Training and Photo Workshop: Car Photography Tips.
